I'm Dr. Natalia Benda a Fort Lauderdale cosmetic dentist. Everyone needs to look their best because we only get one chance to make a good first impression. It doesn't matter if you are a model an actor or an actress as several of my patients are; you deserve to have a great smile. If you live near the Regal 16 Cinema at Andrews Avenue and Cypress Creek Road in Broward then maybe you've seen my "World's Most Powerful Dentist" ad running in the theater. The picture above was taken from that ad. Over the years people have asked me a lot of questions about dentistry and about specific dental procedures. I began to wonder about all the people who don't ask anyone and just suffer due to fear.
So here is one thing everyone asks me about and I want to get this out of the way first. Everyone seems to know that dentists have the highest suicide rate in the United States. We think about and believe this is because people fear going to see us or they complain about pain. The story seems to make sense but the truth about this is not so clear.
Some studies have been conducted recently about connections between jobs and suicide. For example, in 1997, NIOSH and other government agencies analyzed 1980-84 death certificates by all occupations and causes of death, and found statistically significant elevated rates of suicide for:
• White male physicians.
• Black male guards (including supervisors, crossing guards, police, protective service occupations, but not correctional institution occupations).
• White female painters, sculptors, craft-artists and artist printmakers.
In another study, a sociology researcher at the University of California, Riverside, Augustine Kposowa, PhD, looked at records over nine years for about half a million people of whom 545 committed suicide. After controlling for such variables as age, income, race, marital status and region of residence, he found that only laborers and the unemployed had significantly higher risks. The problem seems to be the studies may be unclear and death certificates often don't include a person's type of employment.
I can only speak for myself and let you know that my patients like me a lot and once you come in for a free office consultation I think you will as well. With that in mind the thought of helping people have beautiful smiles is my greatest concern.
